Onthepolynomialtimeputationofequilibriaforcertainexchangeeconomies

Abstract:Theproblemofputingequilibriaforexchangeeconomieshasrecentlystartedtoreceiveagreatdealofattentioninthetheoreticalputersciencemunity.Ithasbeenshownthatequilibriacanbeputedinpolynomialtimeinvariousspecialcases,themostimportantofwhicharewhentradershavelinear,Cobb-Douglas,orarangeofCESutilityfunctions.Theseimportantspecialcasesareinstanceswhenthemarketsatisfiesapropertycalledweakgrosssubstitutability.Classicalresultsineconomics,whichtheoreticalputerscientists(includingus)appeartohavebeenhithertounawareof,showthattheequilibriumpricesinsuchmarketsarecharacterizedbyaninfinitenumberoflinearinequalitiesandthereforeformaconvexset.Inthispaper,weshowthatunderfairlygeneralassumptions,therearepolynomial-timealgorithmstoputeequilibriainsuchmarkets.Tothebestofourknowledge,thesearethefirstpolynomial-timealgorithmsforexchangemarketsunderthegeneralsettingofweakgrosssubstitutability.Toshowthisresult,weneedtobuildontheproofsthatcharacterizetheequilibriaasaconvexset.Asaconsequence,weobtainalternativepolynomial-timealgorithmsforputingequilibriawithlinear,Cobb-Douglas,arangeofCES,aswellascertainothernon-homogeneousutilityfunctionsthatsatisfyweakgrosssubstitutability.Unlikepreviouspolynomial-timealgorithms,ourapproachdoesnotmakeuseofthespecificformoftheseutilityfunctionsandisinthissensemoregeneral.Weexpectourframeworktoworkorbereadilyadaptabletohandleotherexchangemarkets,providedthattheutilityfunctionssatisfyweakgrosssubstitutability.

Abstract:EstimatesoftheOfficeforNationalStatistics(ONS)ofindustrialproductionfor2004showthatthepaceofgrowthslackened.Outputofallproductionindustrieswas0.4%higherthanin2003butinthesecondhalfof2004was0.3%lowerthanayearearlier.ThesefiguresmakeitalmostcertainthatthepreliminaryestimateforGDPinQ4willberevisedupwards.Thus,ariseininterestrateswouldnolongersurprisemarkets.

Abstract:Torevealthequantitativerelationshipbetweenresearchanddevelopment(RandD)investmentandgrossdomesticproduct(GDP)inChina,wehavedemonstratedandanalyzedtherelationshipbetweenRandDinvestmentandscienceandtechnology(SandT)progress,andbasedonamountofSandTstatisticaldata,haveproceededdemonstrationresearchoftherelationshipbetweenRandDinvestmentandGDPinChinawithSolowandvectorautoregression(VAR)models.Cubiccurvefittingandcross-correlationanalysisofthemwithSPSShaveshownthatthereisastrongsynchronicrelationshipbetweenRandDinvestmentandGDP.

Abstract:Inthispaperwere-investigatetheco-movementandthecausalityrelationshipbetweenenergyconsumptionandGDPin18developingcountries,usingdatafortheperiod1975to2001.Recentlydevelopedtestsforthepanelunitroot,heterogeneouspanelcointegration,andpanel-basederrorcorrectionmodelsareemployed.Theempiricalresultsprovideclearsupportofalong-runcointegrationrelationshipafterallowingfortheheterogeneouscountryeffect.Thelong-runrelationshipisestimatedusingafull-modifiedOLS.Theevidenceshowsthatlong-runandshort-runcausalitiesrunfromenergyconsumptiontoGDP,butnotviceversa.Thisresultindicatesthatenergyconservationmayharmeconomicgrowthindevelopingcountriesregardlessofbeingtransitoryorpermanent.
