Abstract
Itisincreasinglyrecognizedthatmoresustainableapproachesareneededforplanningandmanaginglandscapesworldwide.Newtoolsareneededtoeffectivelyapplysustainableprinciplestoplanningandmanagement.Thespatialdimensionofsustainabilityengagesprocessesandrelationsbetweendifferentlanduses,ecosystemsandbiotopesatdifferentscales,andovertime.Therefore,ecologicalknowledgeisessentialwhenplanningforsustainability.Thepaperbrieflyreviewsthehistoricalroleofecologyinplanning,andecologicalplanningandmanagementtheoriesandmethodologies.Buildingonexistingecologicalplanningmethods,wehavedevelopedaconceptualframeworkforsustainablelandscapeplanningapplyinglandscapeecologicalconceptsandexploringthemultiplepotentialrolesoflandscapemetricsasecologicalplanningtools.Weargueforamonframeworkthatappliesecologicalknowledgeinlandplanning,applicabletoallphysicalplanningactivities.Webelievethisframeworkrepresentsasignificantcontributiontoincreasetheacceptanceanduseofecologicalknowledgeacrossthehorizontalsectorsplanning,andtoenhancemunicationbetweenplanners,thuscontributingtoanincreasedscientificandculturalconsensusforsustainablelandscapeplanning.Numerousquantitativemetricshaveemergedfromlandscapeecologythatareusefulforapplyinglandscapeecologyconceptstosustainablelandscapeplanning.Thesemetricsareessentialtoolstoaddressthespatialdimensionofsustainabilityinaquantitativelyrigorousandrobustmanner.Thispaperproposesacore(sub)setofmetrics,identifiedthroughliteraturereviews,whichareunderstoodasthemostusefulandrelevantforlandscapeplanning.Atwo-partsustainablelandscapeplanningperspectiveisproposed,integratinghorizontalandverticalperspectives.Webelievethatthisdualapproachcanhelptostructureandclarifywhy,where,howandwhichlandscapeecologicalprinciplesandmetricscanmosteffectivelyassistplanning.WeincludeademonstrationofthisapproachintheMillRiverWatershed,USA.Wearguethatproperandinformeduseoflandscapemetricswillcontributetoadvancelandscapeplanningtheoryandpracticetowardsthegoalofsustainability.(2002PublishedbyElsevierScienceB.V.)

Newapproachesareneededtoaddresstheplexissuesarisingfromincreasingworldpopulation,depletionofresourcesanddecreasingqualityofhumanhabitat.Thesustainabilityparadigmhasemergedfromtheseglobalissues.Thetermsustainabilitywasfirstusedin1980inIUCN'sWorldConservationStrategy.ThedefinitionapprovedbytheUnitedNationsFood,andAgriculturalOrganization(FAO)Councilin1988forsustainabledevelopmentreadssustainabilityisthehandling,andconservationofnaturalresources,andtheorientationoftechnological,andinstitutionalchangesoastoensurethecontinuoussatisfactionofhumanneedsforpresentandfuturegenerations.
Thesustainableparadigmincludesthesystemsapproach,anotherrecentandfundamentalparadigminenvironmentalsciences.AccordingtoJongmansustainabilityisthecapacityoftheearthtomaintainandsupportlifeandtopersistasasystem.Thesustainabilityconceptisarguablyrelevanttosystemsfromtheglobaltothelocalscale.
