WhateverhappenedtothedeathofnewspaperAyearagotheendseemednear.Therecessionthreatenedtoremovetheadvertisingandreadersthathadnotalreadyfledtotheinter.NewspapersliketheSanFranciscoChroniclewerechroniclingtheirowndoom.America'sFederalTrademissionlaunchedaroundoftalksabouthowtosavenewspapers.ShouldtheybeecharitablecorporationsShouldthestatesubsidizethemItwillholdanothermeetingsoon.Butthediscussionsnowseemoutofdate.

Inmuchoftheworldthereisthesignofcrisis.GermanandBrazilianpapershaveshruggedofftherecession.EvenAmericannewspapers,whichinhabitthemosttroubledeoftheglobalindustry,havenotonlysurvivedbutoftenreturnedtoprofit.Notthe20%profitmarginsthatwereroutineafewyearsago,butprofitallthesame.
