Theimpactsofenhancedlower-troposphericgravitywavedraginducedbysubgrid-scaleorographyonshort-andmedium-rangeforecastsaswellasseasonalsimulationsareexamined.ThisstudyreportsontheenhancedperformanceoftheschemeproposedbyKimandArakawa,whichhasbeenusedintheNationalCentersforEnvironmentalPrediction(NCEP)GlobalSpectralModelsince1997.Theperformanceisevaluatedagainstatraditionalupper-leveldragschemethatisalsoavailableinthemodel.TheexperimentresultsrevealthattheKim–ArakawaschemeimprovesthemovementandintensityofanextratropicalcycloneandacontinentalhighpressuresystemthatwasacpaniedbyheavysnowfalloverKoreaon14–15February2001.Themonthlyverificationformedium-rangeforecastsinDecember2006,whichareinitializedbytheNCEPoperationalanalysis,demonstratesoverallimprovementsintheforecastsoflarge-scalefieldsintheNorthernHemisphere.ModerateimprovementsarealsofoundintheseasonalsimulationofDecember–Februaryfortheyears1996/97,1997/98,and1999/2000.Thisstudyconcludesthattheenhancedlower-leveldragshouldbeproperlyparameterizedinglobalatmosphericmodelsfornumericalweatherpredictionandseasonalprediction.

Experimentsareperformedusinganidealizedversionofanoperationalforecastmodeltodeterminetheimpactonbandedfrontalcloudsofthestrengthofdeformationalforcing,low-levelbaroclinicity,andmodelrepresentationofconvection.Lineconvectionisinitiatedalongthefront,andslantwisebandsextendfromthetopoftheline-convectionelementsintothecoldair.ThisbandingisattributedprimarilytoMadjustment.Thecross-frontalspreadingofthecoldpoolgeneratedbythelineconvectionleadstofurthertriggeringofuprightconvectioninthecoldairthatfeedsintotheseslantwisebands.Secondarylow-levelbandsformlaterinthesimulations,theseareattributedtothereleaseofconditionalsymmetricinstability.Enhanceddeformationstrainleadstoearlieronsetofconvectionandmorecoherentlineconvection.Astrongercoldpoolisgenerated,butitsspeedisreducedrelativetothatseeninexperimentswithweakerdeformationalstrain,becauseofinhibitionbythestrainfield.Enhancedlow-levelbaroclinicityleadstothegenerationofmoreinertialinstabilitybylineconvection(foragivencappingheightofconvection),andconsequentlygreaterstrengthoftheslantwisecirculationsformedbyMadjustment.Theseconclusionsarebasedonexperimentswithoutaconvective-parametrizationscheme.Experimentsusingthestandardoramodifiedschemeforthismodeldemonstrateknownproblemswiththeuseofthisschemeattheawkward4kmgridlengthusedinthesesimulations.

WepresentthefirstevaluationoftheHNO3dataproduct(version2.04.09)fromtheHighResolutionDynamicsLimbSounder(HIRDLS)ontheEarthObservingSystem(EOS)Aurasatellite.TheHIRDLSinstrumentobtainsbetween5000and7000HNO3profilesperday.HIRDLSHNO3dataaregenerallygoodoverthelatituderangeof64°Sto80°Nandpressurerange100to10hPa,withsomeprofiles,dependingonlatitude,havingusefulinformationbetween100to161hPa.Theindividualprofile"measured"precisionisbetween10and15%,butcanbemuchlargeriftheHNO3abundanceisloworoutsidethe100hPato10hParange.GlobalresultsareparedwiththeHNO3observationsfromversion2.2oftheEOSAuraMicrowaveLimbSounder(MLS),anditisfoundthatlarge-scalefeaturesareconsistentbetweenthetwoinstruments.HIRDLSHNO3isbiased0–20%lowrelativetoAuraMLSinthemid-to-highlatitudesandbiasedhighinthetropicalstratosphere.HIRDLSHNO3isalsoparedwithAtmosphericChemistryExperimentFourierTransformSpectrometer(ACE-FTS).Inthesemostlyhigh-latitudeparisonstheHIRDLSHNO3dataarebiased10–30%low,dependingonaltitude.Finally,theHIRDLSHNO3isparedtoinsitudatatakenbytheNOAAChemicalIonizationMassSpectrometer(CIMS)instrumentflownduringthe2005NASAHoustonAuraValidationExperiment(AVE)andtheabilityofHIRDLStomeasureHNO3intheUTLSregionisexamined.
