In A Changing World(00:01:17) Unit One An Overview(00:01:23) --with time going, new things will come into being and old ones will die. It is the same to people, of course, including their languages-that is, new things will exist in different forms, named differently, means differently, so languages change. also people change in different time, different places, so people use different words to communicate.(00:03:19) Let’s see a few examples to give you a brief idea about the change(00:05:23) The first thing you hear when you pick up the phone is “hello” unless the caller who is an Englishman might say, “Are you there?” (for sometime before)(00:06:01) “ho” and “la”—> they were used frequently in the greeting and other occasions, so that in a long time it changes…and it sounds like…(00:07:24) 200years later, in Shakespeare’s time, it had become “halloo,”(‘lu: and later sounds like “halloa[‘lou]” , which were often used by sailors and huntsmen. “Halloo” is used by fox hunters still today.(00:10:03) And in the late 1800’s, “hullo” changed into “hello”, for some reason unknown.(00:12:11) --because they were not sure the new instrument could really carry voices.(00:14:08) --From that time on—only 100 years ago—the “hullo,” became “hello,” as it is heard today.(00:15:15) --“hiyah” became “hi.” what made it in such a simple way-- A long greeting to a short one?(00:16:45) II. Listen or read (A-t-2/a2-t-2/3)(00:20:49) Steps:1, group yourselves into 3 –A, B,and C. 2,you are given 10 min. to read the book and find the answer to the three topics(A on P8-10,B on P18-19,C on p12-13). 3,everyone is required to talk about the topic he has got in his group.(00:24:33) Feedback for (A):(00:24:38) 3, with time passing, all is changing, including people, new things keep on being produced, they need a name for them, so new words appear…and you add a new meaning to old words, so old words with new meaning appear…so change always in language matches people’s lives.(00:28:12) different people habitually use different words. So our language changes and develops, getting more unlike that which our parents used which our children uses.(00:32:33) 4,so people will have their own individual language—use special words or phrases or special accents or pronounce them with special accents, because different people have different habits, culture, experiences, with different jobs, meeting different things, so have the different ways of doing things and it changes too.----(00:36:03) 5,Over a longer period, the differences are accepted.the new words come into use and old words are forgotten.Even grammar changes. ( Can you understand English fully used in 1066?)(00:39:23) eg:(p9-10) Tim calls Biology- “Bilge”, Chemistry- “Stinks”, call sb.carrots”, I don’t – “I dunno”, lab– “laboratory”… more…?(00:44:51)
